Challenge

Surrey Rugby is the constituent body responsible for co-ordinating all rugby activity and developing the grass-roots game, clubs and volunteers across the county.

Our challenge was to find a way to engage clubs and their volunteers with a campaign and revamped awards programme that would boost Surrey Rugby’s profile, create value but also work alongside the nationally established England Rugby Mitsubishi volunteer awards.

Solution

Many volunteers do much more than their designated role, so we devised the campaign around the idea of ‘Helping hands’. It’s a way of recognising that volunteers make a club into something very special for the players, members, parents, kids and supporters week in week out but it also allowed us to address the wider club community to nominate their most deserving helpers by asking them ‘to do your bit for those who always do theirs’.

The hand icons instilled a sense of fun and created an instantly recognisable campaign, reflecting the idea of recognising different people and also helping communicate the different stages of the process.

We designed a new logo and produced a new micro-site to tell the story of the awards and allowed people to nominate their clubs’ volunteers efficiently online, replacing the outdated and complex paper process.

The campaign and website delivered a record number of nominations, which gave the organising committee the confidence to hold the awards at Twickenham Stadium, adding to their new found prestige.

We put together all the materials for the evening, bringing all the campaign elements together to showcase the nominations. They proved so popular that every nominee took theirs home with them.
